Courses taken during study abroad can often fulfill the General Education requirement in theology, but the Theology Department needs specific information in order to determine whether a course at a given institution can count toward the General Education requirement. A proposal for credit should include the name of the accredited school and department offering the course, the number of credits the course is worth, and the course description and/or syllabus including required readings. This information is usually available to students prior to going abroad and should be approved before students leave Georgetown. While certain information is not available until students have actually traveled abroad, students typically have access to e-mail and fax machines while in other countries and should send the necessary information to obtain credit toward a Georgetown degree.
To prevent mistakes and miscommunication after a program begins, students who wish to have courses taken abroad count toward the General Education requirement should receive approval from the department before departure. The department will not waive any General Education requirements on the basis of mistakes made by insufficient preparation and counseling before going abroad.

The Theology Department encourages study abroad and works to accommodate those who travel abroad and wish to major or minor in theology. It is possible to satisfy a number of theology requirements during study abroad, but the Theology Department needs specific information in order to determine whether a course at a given institution can count toward theology major/minor requirements. A proposal for credit should include the name of the accredited school and department offering the course, the number of credits the course is worth, and the course description and/or syllabus including required readings. This information is usually available to students prior to going abroad and should be approved before students leave Georgetown.
Before going abroad, students should consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies and put together a tentative plan of study to determine how selected courses can be applied toward a theology major/minor. This tentative study plan may change after students are actually abroad and require continued communication as courses change. The Director of Undergraduate Studies will also advise on preregistration each semester for current majors/minors. If approval was reached beforehand, there should be no problems with transfer credit after students return to Georgetown.
